How much does ElevenLabs voice-over cost?
For many text-to-speech workflows, the length of your script determines credit demand. ElevenLabs publishes a baseline of approximately one credit per character for standard text-to-speech usage, while some models and API workflows have different rates. A final voice-over may also take several generations while you adjust the pronunciation, pacing and delivery.
Start with your characters per month, add retakes, and then compare your estimated consumption with your plan's available credits. Do not multiply characters by an invented universal dollar rate.
Estimate your monthly voice credits
Uses a baseline of 1 credit per character for an illustrative text-to-speech workflow. Check the selected model's actual rate before buying.
Actual spending depends on the selected model, other shared-credit usage, taxes and plan eligibility.

Worked example: 50,000 characters plus revisions
A creator produces roughly 50,000 characters of narration per month. If the project needs an additional 20% of character-equivalent generation for retakes, a one-credit-per-character scenario results in 60,000 credits. That exceeds the Starter plan's 30,000-credit allowance but falls within Creator's published 121,000-credit allowance—assuming no other products consume those credits.
Be careful with the phrase “50,000 characters of finished speech.” Some creators regenerate the same paragraph several times; what matters for planning is the total characters submitted for generation. Track both the final script length and the revision volume.
Make the estimate more accurate
- Count all spaces and punctuation if your selected model bills them.
- Measure real revision behavior on a small sample rather than assuming every script is accepted first try.
- Check whether your selected voice model or API uses discounted or different per-character rates.
- Leave room in the shared pool for dubbing, sound effects, music or other ElevenLabs features.
- Review commercial-use rights on the plan you select before publishing paid projects.
Using voice-over with AI video
Voice-over can be a separate budget line from video generation. If you make Shorts, advertisements or explainers, estimate the video clips in the AI video credit calculator and combine your voice budget with editing and marketing overhead using the ROI calculator. Frequently asked questions
Does ElevenLabs always charge one credit per character?
No. The standard website text-to-speech example often uses one credit per character, but some models and API routes use other rates. Verify the rate for the exact product and model.
What happens if I regenerate a sentence?
That can add credit usage, subject to any free regeneration conditions shown by ElevenLabs. Budget for revisions, but check whether a particular retry is charged before generating.
Are monthly plan credits only for voice-over?
No. ElevenLabs says credits are shared across its products. Other features can reduce the amount available to text-to-speech.
